Summary
We believe ourselves to be rational and informed. This is not the case. We are systematically wrong, regardless of our level of education, including—perhaps even more so—on subjects we think we know well. But, as Hans Rosling, the brilliant statistician and TED Talk star, reveals, the reasons why we are wrong are always the same! Inherited from an ancestral survival instinct, it is the very workings of our brain that mislead us: • By prompting us to look for a culprit for every phenomenon • By reducing most problems to a sterile binary opposition • By urging us to react urgently (thus confusing fear with danger) • By being easily dazzled by large numbers • By excessively dramatizing (and loving it)... This book teaches us to identify situations where our thinking biases distort our perception of things. Indispensable for understanding the world as it is, Factfulness allows us to finally adopt the healthy habit of basing our opinions only on facts.
